The Northwoods Brothers Wheater and sons, Dean, Doug and Rich, all of Fremont, with Gordon Bushen, son Mark Bushen of White Cloud, longtime friend, Mike Hubert of Hesperia, and third generation brother, Joe Wheater, claim to have produced some of their best music around campfires in the northern forests of Newaygo County. “We like nothing better than to get together for some pickin’ and singin’ in the woods,” Mark Bushen said, “but our fathers taught us that, if you’re going to play and sing, you should play and sing for the Lord, so that’s what we try to do. We want to use our music to lift up Jesus, to point people to Him.” Lead singer Rich Wheater calls the Northwoods Brothers style “northern hillbilly quartet music.” Along with longtime favorites from the country and old-time gospel songbooks, the group also enjoys setting gospel lyrics to favorite old country tunes. Members of the group have also written several original songs.
